John Perino, our September student of the month, was introduced by WHS Principal Todd Grimes who noted that the goals of Rotary fit perfectly in John.  Characterized as humble but accomplished, John is a National Merit semi-finalist, maintained high honors with distinction, recipient of the Yale book award.  He is a member and President of the National Honor Society and was Rhode Island's representative to "Who wants to be a mathematician?".  John is also an Advanced Placement scholar with distinction.  He was the Co-Chair of Character Ed last year and was a Columbus Day Parade Marshall.  John hopes to go to the University of Miami where he will major in Biology in the Pre-Med Program.
 
October 2015
 
Marissa Chiaradio attended our October 19 dinner meeting with her Mom, Dad and Grandmother.  Introduced by WHS Principal Todd Grimes, he noted that she has a million dollar smile and is both intelligent and talented.  A member of both the Westerly Honor Society and the Rhode Island Honor Society, Marissa is also a mentor, a varsity cheerleader, Yearbook staff member and member of Future Business Leaders of America.  She volunteered countless hours with the Pee Wee Football Cheerleaders and with the Columbus Day Parade organization.  Marissa hopes to attend either Suffolk University in Boston or the University of Rhode Island.
 
November 2015
 
Isaac Kaufman, selected to be our November student of the month by WHS Principal Todd Grimes, is a member of the National Honor Society.  He was a Committee Chair from the American Legion's Boy's Nation last summer, a student delegate to WHS Principal Search Committee, a presenter to the State of Rhode Island Dept of Education Technology Summit and an Executive Board member on Westerly Armory's Restoration Committee.  Isaac was goalie and captain of the State Champion Westerly Varsity Lacrosse Team and he was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Championship Game.  Principal Grimes said that he looks for Isaac whenever there is a computer problem.  Isaac hopes to attend Carnegie Mellon.

Recognized by WHS Principal Todd Grimes as our December student of the month, Morgan Bettencourt has an infectious personality that spills over into everything she does.  An example of her ability was how she made the Fall Pep Rally into one of the best ever - "funny, classy and quite wonderful", said Principal Grimes.  Morgan is a four-year member of the cheerleading squad and the Yearbook staff, serving as its Editor this year.  She also is a member of the school's chorus and has volunteered countless hours with a number of local organizations such as the Columbus Day Parade Committee and Shine a Light on Heroin.

Student of the Month Joseph Brodeur has been listed on the High Honor Roll with Distinction for all four years of high school.  He is a member and Vice President of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the George Eastman Young Leaders Award out of the University of Rochester.  He won the Voice of Democracy Essay Award from the Westerly VFW and took second place in the Rhode Island American Legion Constitutional Oration contest.  He is Class Secretary and the Band's Drum Major, he was also delegate to the American Legion Boys State program and Vice President and store manager of the Future Business Leaders of America.  Joe is also a Boy Scout, working toward his Eagle Award with a project at St Pius X Roman Catholic Church.  Joe is a Charter member of the newly inaugurated Westerly High School Interact Club.

Mallory Barney was selected to be our February Student of the Month.  In his introduction Principal Todd Grimes noted her love of country and community.  The American spirit and the basic values of fairness, justice, and loyalty are at the core of who she is.  Mallory appreciates the opportunities that she has had.  She wants to give back by being a good role model and good neighbor for those she meets and those who will follow her.  She has been working with eighth graders, as well as her peers in high school, to set up pen pals for refugees.  Mallory is deciding between URI and RIC for next fall with a degree in secondary education.

The March Student of the Month is Emily Roy.  Emily has achieved high honors with distinction for all four years of high school and has received the President's Volunteer Service Award.  She is a member of both the National and Rhode Island Honor Societies.  She is an athlete having competed in gymnastics all four years, was named a High School National Gymnastic Qualifier in her Senior year, served as a representative on the Class Council all four years, the Pep Club, the School Improvement Team, Freshman mentor and volunteered at the Johnnycake Center.
