Dr. Robert Gianfrocco shared that his goal is to get people to the place where they need to be. He is the medical director of the Urgent Care Unit of the South County Medical & Wellness Center in Westerly. It is an interesting job in that you see people with a whole range of medical problems.    Someone might come in with chest pains and you have to decide if they are having a heart attack or if it is something else that only presents as such.
Most people that come into urgent care want to be in and out quickly. The hard part of Dr. Gianfrocco’s job comes when he has to deliver some bad news. When more tests are needed or a patient needs to be admitted to a local hospital, the patient will often need to be convinced. In the end it all has to do with patient care and getting them to a place where they can be treated and released.
Dr. Gianfrocco noted that 80% of the patients that walk into the emergency room are better served in urgent care centers. About 15% of those people who show up at urgent care should actually be seen in an emergency room. Having served as an emergency room physician prior to accepting this post, he is well suited to the job.
