Friday, 5 June, Greg Powell, the Executive Director at Reforest the Tropics, visited Westerly Middle School's fifth grade class to speak about climate change and RTT's program - "the world's most carbon capturing forests" along with Victor Martinez, the head Forester in Costa Rica, via Zoom. After Greg gave a brief summary of RTT's work to fight climate change through forestry, the students were invited to ask questions. Victor was in a new forest area so there were many small trees. He mentioned that many wildlife has found their way into the forests - tapir, puma, snakes. macaw. He also said that 175 tons of carbon dioxide has been stored as of 2024 testing. Carbon dioxide (CO2), that traps the sun's energy on earth, is the leading cause of climate change. So, RTT's goals continue to work toward carbon capture, generate income for farms switching from cattle to trees and biodiversity in planting - variety of species.
